SUBANG JAYA – Police have smashed an online gambling syndicate raking in profits of about RM700,000 a month, following the arrest of 19 individuals in several raids at an apartment in USJ 21 here.
Subang Jaya deputy police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor told a press conference today that officers raided five apartment units at about 6.50pm on Monday.
He said the suspects, including five women, are aged between 21 and 47, adding that 11 of them are foreigners.
Police also seized several computers, mobile phones and equipment believed to have been used in the illegal operations, he added.
Amihizam said initial investigation showed that the apartment units were used as call centres for online gambling catering to customers in Malaysia, Myanmar and Indonesia using Facebook and Wechat.
He said police believe that the syndicate had been in operation for about two months and was renting the units for about RM2,000 a month each.
The suspects were housed in different units and paid between RM2,000 and RM4,000 a month to work as operators.
All 19 have been remanded for four days from yesterday, and will be investigated under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Immigration Act 1959/63 for possessing expired travel documents. – Bernama, August 4, 2021
