Makes no sense to keep Parliament shut: Najib

KUALA LUMPUR – Pekan MP Datuk Seri Najib Razak continues to slam the government’s decision to keep Parliament shuttered, saying the decision makes no sense at all.

He said this “strange” decision is among many examples why the pandemic is worsening under the Perikatan Nasional administration.

“If the MPs, who have been exposed, are free to go anywhere, it is safe to reopen Parliament now because empty chambers do not infect anyone.

“Why quarantine an empty Dewan Rakyat for two weeks while MPs are allowed out and about, including to see Tuanku (Yang di-Pertuan Agong), enter their offices and have repeated night meetings at home?”

His comments come amid the pressure that his party – Umno – is piling on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, starting with withdrawing support two days ago and urging for him to resign.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin said he remains confident of his majority in Dewan Rakyat and will seek to prove it when the house convenes in September.

Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara’s special sittings have been disrupted and postponed, with the government citing concerns of Covid-19 outbreak recently.

However, detractors said the delay was another ploy to keep the prime minister in power. – The Vibes, August 5, 2021
