KUALA LUMPUR – Perak Umno is backing party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, saying that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional have lost the majority in Dewan Rakyat.

Party state liaison committee chief Datuk Saarani Mohamad said in a statement that Umno will continue to lead the Perak government with a focus on pandemic handling and meeting the people’s needs.

Bersatu lost power in the state after a coup late last year that saw deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu removed as Menteri Besar.

Umno later formed a state government with the support of Pakatan Harapan state lawmakers.

Meanwhile, Penang Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir said the state chapter is also supporting Zahid.

“We appeal to all party leaders and members to not only support but accept the decision made on August 3 as it is in line with the resolution made during the general assembly in March.”

Maran Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahaniza Shamsuddin has expressed disappointment in its MP Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib, who chose to back Muhyiddin.

“The party’s decision has to be respected by all Umno leaders. We are disappointed with the Maran MP’s statement that clearly goes against the will of the party,” said Shahaniza in a statement. – The Vibes, August 5, 2021
