KUALA LUMPUR – In a message to his comrades amid the ongoing political imbroglio, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged party members to realise their responsibility.
The former deputy prime minister, in a Facebook post, reiterated the resolution passed by delegates during the Umno general assembly in March, which he said represents the voice of the people, who want the Perikatan Nasional government out.
The general assembly had decided for Umno to withdraw support for the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin-led administration when the time is right.
Zahid said it is incumbent for the Umno leadership to remain united in carrying out its obligations, including championing the country and people’s welfare, defending the supremacy of the federal constitution, upholding the rule of law, and protecting the sovereignty of the royal institution.
“We must realise that our responsibility and priority as the Umno leadership is to not defend the proven failure and treason (committed by the government).
“Don’t worry because deception and lies will never override the truth. In God we seek success, after all our efforts.”

His statement comes on the back of a brewing political crisis following Umno’s official withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin and his government on Tuesday.
In response, Muhyiddin had on Wednesday announced that he will put his legitimacy to the test in Parliament next month, amid a falling out with Istana Negara over an emergency ordinance revocation, which has failed to materialise.
Yesterday, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also deputy prime minister, led dozens of Barisan Nasional MPs in announcing their support for embattled Muhyiddin and PN.
However, two Umno cabinet members – Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah – resigned from their government positions, throwing further uncertainty on Muhyiddin’s leadership.
Zahid thanked Umno leaders and MPs who continue to stand by the party, saying the pull-out is not done on personal interest, but the best interest of the people.
