GEORGE TOWN – In just two days, the 20,000 coronavirus vaccines approved by the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force for the agriculture sector in Penang have been snapped up like pisang goreng panas (hot banana fritters).

Penang health exco Dr Hajah Norlela Ariffin in a Facebook post today said all the orders have been paid in full.

“This is to help our friends in the agrofood sector ensure food for us... (in) Penang.”

In celebration of the national Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen Day, the vaccines have been secured for those working in the field, with vaccinations to start on Monday.

Those under the category will join retailers and workers in non-manufacturing sectors, and small and medium enterprises to be vaccinated at the Bukit Jawi Golf Resort under a state government initiative.

Penang is also prepping itself for Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan by ensuring those in the food industry are fully vaccinated, as dine-ins will be allowed.

In view of this, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has drawn up a vaccination plan for all traders and hawkers registered under it. There are 5,747 MBPP-licensed traders, and all will get their first dose by September.

This plan will also include all 7,743 licensed food and beverage operators, who will get their shots before dine-ins are allowed.

To ensure this runs smoothly, all traders, operators and workers in the sector will need to register to be vaccinated via MySejahtera. Once registered, they must fill in their information via a link to secure their place in the MBPP Traders and Hawkers Vaccination Plan. – The Vibes, August 7, 2021
