KOTA KINABALU – Sandakan police are now battling Covid-19 as several personnel have been infected in an outbreak.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun today said the Lebuh Empat cluster started with an infected 63-year-old detainee who was being held at the Sandakan police headquarters lockup.
The detainee tested positive on Thursday, and later infected 50 others, which contributed 39 cases (35 detainees, four Sandakan cops) to the national tally today.
Sabah recorded a second Covid-19 cluster in Nabawan today – the Sarikan cluster – a community outbreak that started with a 34-year-old man who tested positive on Tuesday after experiencing fever, sore throat, flu, cough, and losing his senses of smell and taste since July 27.
The cluster recorded a total of 15 cases (including the index case), with 34 others still awaiting screening results.
The state has continued to record four-figure infections with 1,255 cases today, with only one remaining district categorised as an orange zone (21 to 40 active cases) – Nabawan, while the rest (26 districts) are red zones.
A total of 38 new Covid-19 cases were detected among detainees at temporary detention centres and prisons who are waiting for deportation.
Sabah also recorded 13 Covid-19 deaths today, Kota Kinabalu topping the list with six fatalities.
The district also logged the highest tally of fresh cases with 241 infections today, followed by Tuaran (143), Tawau (135), Beluran (123) and Sandakan (108).
Masidi said the figure was contributed by close contact cases (618 or 49.24%), symptomatic screening (247 or 19.68%) and cluster screening (131 or 10.43%).
“From the high percentage of Covid-19 cases contributed from close contacts in Sabah, we can conclude there is a high possibility of there being activities conducted against the standard operating procedures set, despite the continuous advice and recommendations from the government,” Masidi said, reminding the public to adhere to these procedures. – The Vibes, August 7, 2021
