[UPDATED] New Covid-19 cases down to 17,236; another 212 deaths logged

KUALA LUMPUR – New Covid-19 cases continue to go down, with the Health Ministry reporting 17,236 fresh infections today.

Selangor again topped other states in terms of caseload with 5,740, but this is still significantly lower than the 6,565 it reported yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur saw 1,567, Kedah (1,328), Johor (1,232), Sabah (1,247) and Negri Sembilan (1,215).

Perak had 935, Kelantan saw 914 and Penang recorded 908.

Pahang notched 604 new infections, while Sarawak had 589 and Terengganu, 501.

Melaka logged 360 cases, Putrajaya (66), Perlis (22) and Labuan (8).

All in all, Malaysia has seen 1,279,776 infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry said another 212 deaths take the toll to 10,961.

Of the 1,095 patients in intensive care, 579 require breathing aid.

There are 15,187 fresh recoveries, making for a total of 1,041,585.

Of today’s 17,236 cases, 372 are defined as Categories 3 to 5, while 16,864 are Categories 1 and 2. Some 4,556 patients today also have received a Covid-19 jab.

Meanwhile, the 212 deaths today 16 were in Selangor, followed by Johor (24), Kedah (20), Kuala Lumpur (18), Pahang (16), Negri Sembilan (14), Penang (12), Sabah (11), Melaka (8), Terengganu (5), Kelantan (4), Perak (2) and one each in perlis and Sarawak.

Malaysia’s infectivity rate (Rt) as of yesterday stood at 1.07 – with Kelantan recording 1.25, Terengganu (1.19), and Sabah (1.17). All states have an Rt more than 1.0 except Labuan and Perlis.

As for clusters, the ministry reports 1,232 remain active, including the 36 new ones identified today.

Nineteen of the new clusters involved worksites in Johor, Selangor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, Penang, Sarawak, and Terengganu, with a cumulative 718 infections.

Thirteen are community clusters in Kelantan, Pahang, Selangor, and Johor, which registered 254 Covid-19 cases.

Only two detention centre clusters were identified in Penang and Johor, with a total of 121 infections.

One religious cluster was identified in Johor recording 19 infections, while one high-risk individual cluster in Kedah was detected with 21 registered infections. – The Vibes, August 9, 2021
