[UPDATED] Record-high 21,668 Covid-19 cases, S’gor leads with 6,278

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia logged 21,668 Covid-19 cases today, the highest number of daily infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry said this takes the cumulative number to 1,342,215.

Selangor logged the most cases at 6,278, followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,436), Kedah (2,143), Sabah (2,052), Johor (1,706), Penang (1,229), Sarawak (1,216), Kelantan (972), Perak (930), Negri Sembilan (899), Pahang (629), Terengganu (594), Melaka (494), Putrajaya (56), Perlis (23) and Labuan (11). 

The Health Ministry reported 318 coronavirus deaths, pushing the overall toll to 11,691.

Of the 1,059 patients in intensive care, 543 require breathing aid. Total recoveries, on the other hand, stand at 1,093,503 with the 17,687 registered today.

From the fresh cases logged today, 440 are in Categories 3, 4 and 5, with the remainder in Categories 1 and 2. 

Selangor marked 118 of the 318 total fatalities today, followed by Johor (52), Kuala Lumpur (45), Sabah (28) and Kedah (19).

Penang and Melaka saw 10 fatalities each, and Perak recorded eight deaths.

Negri Sembilan logged seven deaths, while Sarawak, Kelantan and Terengganu had four each. 

The ministry said the national infectivity rate stood at 1.06 as of yesterday. 

Perlis registered the highest rate at 1.40, followed by Kelantan (1.23), and Sabah and Penang (1.16). All states recorded a rate of above 1.0 except for Labuan and Putrajaya.

A total of 45 new clusters have been detected, with 30 linked to worksites in Johor, Kelantan, Pahang, Penang, Sarawak, Selangor, Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur, involving a total of 1,104 infections.

Eleven community clusters in Johor, Kelantan, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak logged 251 cases.

Two high-risk group clusters with 36 cases were reported in Kelantan and Perak, while two clusters related to higher education involving 24 cases were reported in Selangor and Johor. – The Vibes, August 12, 2021
