GEORGE TOWN – The Penang government is offering free tuition classes to Year 4, Forms 1 and 4, and Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates through the e-Tuisyen Rakyat (eTR) programme.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said eTR offers three main subjects, namely English, mathematics and science, and is open to students who need additional classes.
“After the movement control order (MCO) was announced in March last year, the state government took a proactive step by launching eTR, a free online tuition programme through Penggerak Komuniti Muda (Peka).
“This year, a total of 485 students have registered for eTR. Apart from SPM candidates, eTR this year was also expanded with the opening of new classes for Year 4, and Forms 1 and 4 students,” he said in a statement today.
Initially, said Chow, the move to introduce eTR was aimed at helping SPM candidates who are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
At that time, he said, the subjects offered were only English and mathematics, and a total of 158 SPM candidates in 2020 participated in the programme for free.
“A comparative analysis of the final examination results in 2019 with the SPM 2020 results of eTR programme participants found that the percentage of grades for both subjects increased to 91% for mathematics and 78% for English.
“The state government is always concerned about education and will find ways to help improve the performance and achievement of all students, even when faced with a pandemic.”
