KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 19,740 new Covid-19 cases today, continuing the downward trend after 20,546 infections yesterday.
The fresh infections bring the cumulative total to 1,424,639.
Selangor remains the state with the highest number of cases with 5,706, followed by Sabah (1,728), Kedah (1,592), Sarawak (1,566), Johor (1,510), Kuala Lumpur (1,360), Penang (1,251), Kelantan (1,227) and Melaka (1,120).
States with fewer than 1,000 cases are Perak (938), Terengganu (688), Pahang (646), Negri Sembilan (343), Putrajaya (43), Perlis (20) and Labuan (2).
The nation recorded 274 deaths today, bringing the toll to 12,784.
As many as 17,450 patients recovered today. Of the 1,047 in intensive care, 520 require ventilator support.
Of the 19,740 cases today, only 55 (83.6% not fully vaccinated) are Category 4 and need oxygen, and 85 (82.4% not fully vaccinated) are Category 5 and critical condition.
Health Director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of deaths today, Selangor claimed 100, Kuala Lumpur (39), Johor (31), Kedah (21), Penang (19), Melaka (16), Sabah (15), Perak (10), Kelantan (9), Negri Sembilan and Sarawak (5 each), Terengganu (3) and Pahang (1).
A total of 77 victims were brought in dead, he added.
Malaysia has recorded 4,218 clusters since the start of the pandemic last year, including 35 new ones today. As many as 2,879 have ended, while 1,339 remain active.
Of the new clusters, 21 are related to worksites, 11 are from the community, two from high-risk groups and one from an education institution.
The new cluster with the highest number of cases is the Jalan I-Park Satu Industrial cluster in Kulai, Johor, with 99 infections, while the one with the lowest number is the Kg Bayu Lalang community cluster in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, with five. – The Vibes, August 16, 2021
