KOTA KINABALU – Sabah recorded 2,651 new Covid-19 cases today, but 99% are in categories 1 and 2, experiencing none or mild symptoms.

Sabah Covid-19 official spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said in a statement today that category 2 (mild symptoms) patients continue to make up the largest group at 63.5% (1,683 people), followed by category 1 (no symptoms) at 35.5% or 940 people.

“Only 22 patients are in categories 3, 4, and 5, with 11 in category 3 (pneumonia), two in category 4 (pneumonia requiring oxygen support) and nine in category 5 (in intensive care unit),” he said.

Sabah’s Covid-19 cases today saw a slight decline from yesterday’s new high at 2,738, with Kota Kinabalu registering the highest number with 669 cases, followed by Penampang (406), Tuaran (247), Tawau (240), Sandakan (178), Papar (130), and Lahad Datu (100).

Tongod is the only district out of 27 that had zero Covid-19 cases today.

Masidi also said that 66% or 1,747 cases from today’s fresh infections in Sabah are backlogged cases from over two days ago.

He said 447 cases (16.9%) are from tests registered over five days ago, 364 cases (13.7%) from four to five days ago, and 936 cases (35.3%) from two to three days ago.

“We have to reveal this to the people to avoid the perception that all the new Covid-19 cases in Sabah today happened in the past 24 hours,” he said.

Meanwhile, Masidi said that a new cluster was detected in Lahad Datu – the Cantawan cluster, which registered 27 new Covid-19 cases today, making a total of 46 positive cases involving the cluster.

Further details on the cluster will be revealed in his statement later this evening. –The Vibes, August 21, 2021
