KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 20,837 new Covid-19 cases today, an increase from the 17,672 yesterday. The total caseload now stands at 1,593,602.
Selangor logged the highest number of infections with 4,645, followed by Sabah (3,376), Penang (2,054), Kedah (1,772), Johor (1,743), Sarawak (1,543), Kelantan (1,422), Kuala Lumpur (1,284) and Perak (1,242).
States with fewer than 1,000 infections are Pahang (521), Melaka (396), Terengganu (383), Negri Sembilan (351), Perlis (74), Putrajaya (27) and Labuan (4).
Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the nation celebrated 18,613 recoveries today, bringing the total discharged to 1,316,336 or 82.6% of overall cases.
However, 1,063 patients are still in intensive care, of which 511 require breathing aid.
Dr Noor Hisham said of the 20,837 cases, only 358 (1.7%) are under Categories 3, 4 and 5.
He added that 16,949 (81.3%) cases today involve unvaccinated or yet to be fully vaccinated individuals.
Malaysia recorded 211 deaths today, with Johor claiming 41, Selangor (36), Kedah (32), Penang (23), Sabah (17), Perak (16), Negri Sembilan (12), Kuala Lumpur (10), Pahang (9), Terengganu (5), Melaka and Kelantan (3 each), and Perlis and Sarawak (2 each).
Dr Noor Hisham said the country has reported 4,506 clusters since the pandemic began, including 34 new ones today. A total of 3,060 have ended, while 1,446 remain active.
Of the new clusters, 20 are related to workplaces, nine from the community, two from high-risk groups and one from a detention centre.
The cluster with the most cases is the Bukit Mahkota workplace cluster in Hulu Langat, Selangor, with 122 infections, while the cluster with the least amount of cases is the Kg Jawa Kota Tinggi community cluster in Kota Tinggi, Johor, with seven infections. – The Vibes, August 24, 2021
