MIRI – Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing urged parents to be aware of new, more infectious Covid-19 strains after a newborn baby tested positive for the virus.

The Progressive Democratic Party president said of the 44 new cases in Bintulu yesterday, one is a newborn and some are children aged between 2 and 4.

“How did a newborn baby get infected? Is it due to the carelessness of adults? Babies and children are not vaccinated against Covid-19, and this makes them even more vulnerable,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“There have been many incidents of children catching Covid-19. Parents must take serious note of this alarming development.”

Tiong had, just four days ago, reported that a 1-year-old has been infected with the virus.

He warned against too much socialising, despite most districts in Sarawak being under Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

On August 5, a 2-year-old contracted Covid-19 after a family shopping trip in Bintulu.

Bintulu is the latest district to report Delta cases in Sarawak, with the other districts being Bau, Miri, Sibu, Lundu, Serian, Tebedu, Kuching and Samarahan. Of the districts, all are still in NRP Phase 2 except Bintulu, Miri and Sibu.

A 10pm-5am curfew has been imposed on Bau, Lundu, Serian, Tebedu, Kuching, Simunjan and Samarahan. – The Vibes, August 25, 2021
