GEORGE TOWN – Seberang Prai Tengah (SPT) police have issued compounds of RM10,000 to an Indian restaurant owner and RM2,000 to 16 customers for violating Covid-19 standard operating procedures.
District police chief Shafee Abd Samad said the eatery, located in Jalan Perusahaan Bukit Tengah near Bukit Mertajam, was found operating till 11.30pm.
He said police will not tolerate irresponsible behaviour from business owners, seeing that the government is still struggling to bring down Covid-19 case numbers.
The restaurant owner and customers in question violated Regulation 26 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) under the National Recovery Plan.
SPT has recorded 8,163 coronavirus infections, the highest tally in Penang in the last two weeks.
Today, it saw another 217 cases, or about 10% of the 2,078 logged in the state. – The Vibes, August 26, 2021
