KUALA LUMPUR – Former chief secretary to the government Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid died in hospital at 1.40am today.
The death was confirmed by his family in a brief statement.
“The body is still at the hospital. Funeral arrangements will be made known soon.”
Sarji, who was also Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) chairman, held the chief secretary’s post from 1990 to 1996.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali in a Facebook post conveyed his condolences to Sarji’s family.
He described Sarji as a highly regarded and respected public administration figure.
“His death is a great loss to the country... May his soul be blessed by the Almighty and placed with the righteous. Al-Fatihah.”
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, too, conveyed their condolences.
“Their Majesties appreciate and praise highly his services, deeds and sacrifices to the country,” said a statement on Istana Negara’s Facebook page.
Ikim said Sarji will be buried about 11am at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery. – Bernama, August 28, 2021
