KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been made National Recovery Council chairman, which carries the rank of minister.
“The government is confident in Muhyiddin’s ability to lead national recovery strategies to achieve the best impact on the economy and revive the people’s lives, which have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali in a statement today.
“The government congratulates Muhyiddin on this appointment.”
He said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has been informed of the appointment.
Just two days ago, it was reported that PAS president and Marang MP Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang would continue to serve as Malaysia’s special envoy to the Middle East.
Progressive Democratic Party’s Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (Bintulu MP) and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party’s Datuk Seri Richard Riot (Serian MP) are also retained as special envoys to China and East Asia, respectively.
Hadi was appointed to the position on April 2 last year, just a month after the infamous Sheraton Move that led to Muhyiddin being named as prime minister.
This was followed by Tiong on April 20 and Riot on May 16 the same year. All three positions carry the status of minister.
Muhyiddin’s time as prime minister came to an end on August 16 this year, after 18 Umno lawmakers withdrew their support for him and his Perikatan Nasional government.
Following his resignation from the top job, the Agong appointed Muhyiddin’s deputy Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as prime minister after 114 MPs pledged their support via statutory declarations.
