GEORGE TOWN – Newly reappointed senator Lim Hui Ying is calling on the federal government, especially the Health Ministry, to look into helping Penang curb rising Covid-19 numbers by speeding up vaccinations.
Lim also requested more resources for hospitals and health clinics in the state so they can effectively test, trace, and treat those in contact with the highly contagious virus.
“I reiterate my commitment to always defend and support the rights and welfare of Penang and its people in the senate, especially when our country and state face the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I will also continue to fight for women’s rights and gender equality, the economic interests of the state of Penang, and continue the work of institutional reform both at the parliamentary level and in the state of Penang,” she said in a statement.
Lim is the sister of former Penang chief minister and current DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
The state government nominated Lim and lawyer Fadhlina Siddiq Fadzil to serve as senators for a three-year term yesterday.
Lim, who is also Penang DAP secretary, completed her senatorship on August 26 with Mohd Yusmadi Mohd Yusoff of PKR.
Fadhlina from PKR will be helming the senatorship in Yusmadi’s place.
Fadhlina is the daughter of the late Datuk Dr Siddiq Fadzil, a former Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia president.
“The appointment of two women as senators representing the state of Penang is very meaningful as it clearly states the stand of the state government under Pakatan Harapan, which recognises the position and contribution of women in nation-building.
“I will continue to work with Fadhlina in highlighting women’s issues and Penang’s state affairs in the Dewan Negara,” she said. – The Vibes, September 5, 2021
