KUALA LUMPUR – Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today said detailed discussions on the adjustment and relaxation of standard operating procedures in preparation for the Covid-19 endemic phase will involve three other ministers.
He said they are Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa.
“The Pandemic Management Special Committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on September 2 agreed that I, as senior minister entrusted with leading the country’s pandemic management efforts under the National Security Council, will involve the three ministers (in the discussions),” he said in a statement.
“I will call them soon to commence the detailed talks and to make a joint decision on the SOP adjustment and relaxation in preparation for the endemic phase.”
He said he stated in a press conference on Thursday that the country is heading towards the endemic phase, and the transition into the said phase will begin by the end of next month.
“As part of preparations, the government is looking into the suitable SOP relaxations to allow people to return to their everyday lives with as much freedom as possible in the new normal.
“At the same time, the government will continue protecting the people’s lives and livelihoods, while reviving the economy and ensuring the people’s well-being.”
The eased SOPs may include allowing interstate travel, as well as the reopening of more economic sectors, he said.
“However, many factors have to be taken into consideration as the decision involves people’s health and national security.” – Bernama, September 6, 2021
