MIRI – Sarawak’s 3,714 new Covid-19 cases today prompted an immediate reaction from two politicians, with one warning the public against participating in social activities and another calling for stricter standard operating procedure enforcement.

State Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian urged residents against taking part in social get-togethers.

“The increase in daily cases is due to the Delta strain. Stop socialising and holding unnecessary meet-ups. The variant can be transmitted easily,” he said on Facebook.

Sarawak is the state with the highest virus tally today, overtaking Selangor (2,126), and logging 12 new deaths.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, meanwhile, called on the state government to formulate a proper plan to deal with Delta cases.

“All we hear from state leaders is that Covid-19 is becoming endemic in Sarawak, and we must learn to live with it. This makes the rakyat even more worried.”

SOP enforcement and testing in Covid-19 hotspots must be increased, he said.

Kuching recorded 1,765 fresh infections, followed by Samarahan (358), Sibu (276), Bintulu (158), Asajaya (120) and other districts (several dozen).

Today’s 12 fatalities – Pusa (4), Kuching (3), and Bintulu, Serian, Sibu, Song and Sri Aman (1 each) – take the state’s toll to 576.

The state Disaster Management Committee has imposed the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) on 25 localities and extended the order in seven.

Thirteen localities saw the EMCO lifted. – The Vibes, September 6, 2021
