BUTTERWORTH – A Road Transport Department assistant enforcement officer was today sentenced to 160 months’ jail and fined RM80,000 for promising not to act against a logistics company in return for bribe money.
Presiding over the special corruption trial at the sessions court here, judge Ahmad Azahari Abdul Hamid meted out the sentence to Hanisham Din, 50, who was found guilty on eight counts.
Hanisham was found guilty of accepting bribes as an inducement not to act against Kedah Coastal Transport & Trading Sdn Bhd.
He was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment and fined RM10,000, in default of three months’ jail, on each count.
The judge ordered the jail terms to run concurrently, allowing Hanisham to spend only 20 months behind bars.
Hanisham committed the offences in 2016 as an inducement to not take action against the company’s lorries if they commit offences under the Road Transport Act 1987.
He was charged on August 21, 2019 under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, read together with Section 165 of the Penal Code.
In another case at the same court, a 44-year-old Universiti Sains Malaysia administrative assistant was sentenced to a day’s jail and fined RM25,000 for misusing her position as the owner of a company by not taking action with regard to payments on invoices.
Judge Ahmad Azahari meted out the sentence to Zurina Abdul Hamid, who pleaded guilty.
She committed the offence between 2013 and 2017, and was initially charged on September 28 last year.
She served the jail term and paid the fine.
MACC deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Azlan Basri prosecuted, while lawyer R.S.N. Rayer represented the accused.
