KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu’s exit from Pakatan Harapan that led to the collapse of the federal government last year has been attributed to the coalition being “left-wing”.
This is according to party information chief Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who said “left-wing” ideologies are in conflict with Bersatu’s pursuit of Malay, Bumiputera and Islamic principles as the basis of national prosperity.
PH’s main components practise a centre-left flavour of politics that contradict the establishment of Malaysia as a country, he said.
‘We took the risk of losing power to ensure we can defend our principles,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysia Gazette.
“Praise God, with the risk we took, we formed the Perikatan Nasional government.”
He told a press conference that after the formation of the PN administration, the pact was faced with the twin Covid-19 and economic crises.
However, said Wan Saiful, the government’s focus throughout was the welfare of the nation.
“Never in the history of Malaysia had so much assistance been given to the rakyat.”
On Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as prime minister, he said it was a sacrifice to preserve Bersatu’s agenda.
It was not the first time Muhyiddin made such a sacrifice, he said, pointing to how the Pagoh MP and Bersatu president previously lost his positions as deputy prime minister and Umno vice-president.
Muhyiddin was sacked in 2015 largely for his comments on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal when Datuk Seri Najib Razak was prime minister.
“It was not for positions, but for the importance of the agenda that formed Muhyiddin’s sacrifice. He lost his positions as deputy prime minister and Umno vice-president to maintain his principles,” said Wan Saiful.
