KUALA LUMPUR – Domestic travellers from across the country, with the exception of those living in areas under the enhanced movement control order, can visit Langkawi from September 16, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
She said those allowed to travel to the holiday island include residents of states under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan.
Would-be tourists must first apply for a police permit before their departure, and furnish the necessary documents, such as flight and ferry tickets or hotel reservation receipts, as proof, she said.
Those travelling by car must use the services of a travel agency, at least for transportation from the original destination to the ferry jetty.
“Tourists who start their journey from Kedah and Perlis, as well as those travelling by air, are not required to engage the services of a travel agency,” Nancy told a press conference at the Malaysia Tourism Centre here today.
She said another requirement for travellers to Langkawi is that they must have completed their Covid-19 vaccination.
No age limit has been set, and insurance coverage and virus screening are not mandatory, she added.
She said day trips, overnight stays with bookings, and holiday package tours via licensed travel companies that are registered with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry are allowed.
The permitted “tourism bubble” activities include hotels and homestays; beach activities; water sports; snorkelling; scuba diving; eco-geo travel activities; arts, cultural and heritage premises; theme parks and family entertainment centres; and, tours of an academic nature.
Nancy said the ministry will monitor the implementation of the Langkawi tourism bubble and get feedback on the programme within two weeks.
She said the ministry is targeting 420,000 visitors up to September.
“Malindo Air and Firely are offering a RM50 discount on flight tickets under the Economic Stimulus Package 1.0.
“Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia are offering promotional prices starting at RM89 and RM59, respectively, for one-way tickets.”
