[UPDATED] Former CID chief Zaman Khan dies at 80

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Tan Sri Zaman Khan Rahim Khan died at the National Heart Institute here today. He was 80.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani confirmed this to Bernama.

Former IGP Tun Mohd Hanif Omar said Zaman Khan’s remains will be brought to Bukit Aman Mosque for funeral prayers, and the burial at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery will be held after Asar prayers.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also conveyed his condolences to Zaman Khan’s family in a post on his official Facebook account.

Ismail Sabri said Malaysians have lost a highly respected personality in the area of security and public order.

“Allahyarham was very firm and committed to strengthening security and public order throughout his service,” he said.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah also expressed their condolences to Zaman Khan’s family. 

Describing his passing as a great loss to the Royal Malaysian Police and the country, Their Majesties are saddened by Zaman Khan’s demise and hope his family will be patient and remain strong during this time of grief.

“Their Majesties also appreciate his service, deeds and contributions to the people and the country.

“Their Majesties pray that his soul will be blessed by Allah SWT and placed among the righteous,” read the statement posted on Istana Negara’s official Facebook page.

Zaman Khan was Bukit Aman CID director from 1989 to 1993. He handled a number of high-profile cases, including those of notorious robber Wong Swee Chin, better known as Botak Chin, and gangster P. Kalimuthu, known as Bentong Kali.

He served as Selangor police chief from 1975 to 1978, and ended his service in the uniformed forces as Prisons Department director-general in 1997.

Prior to taking over as Selangor’s top cop, Zaman Khan was involved in handling the Japanese Red Army hostage situation here in August 1975. – Bernama, September 11, 2021
