KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has recorded its highest daily Covid-19 death toll yet at 592, bringing the overall figure to 20,419.

According to the Health Ministry’s new CovidNow website, of the 592 reported fatalities as at 11.59pm yesterday, 100 are labelled “actual deaths”.

Of yesterday’s tally, 359 are in Selangor, Sabah (53), Kedah (49), Perak (28), Penang (27), Negri Sembilan (15), Kelantan (11), and Sarawak and Johor (10 each). Other states have fewer than 10 fatalities.

Eighty-eight of the deaths are categorised as brought in dead (BID), bringing total BID cases to 3,676.

Malaysia registered 19,550 new infections as of midnight as the country inches towards a cumulative total of two million cases. The caseload currently stands at 1,960,500.

There are 1,272 patients in intensive care, with 724 on ventilators.

As at 11.59pm on Wednesday, the national positivity rate stood at 13.1%.

On the coronavirus vaccination rate, 65.2% (21,290,857 people) of the adult population has received at least one dose, while 52.1% (17,026,781) is fully vaccinated. The percentage of those unvaccinated is 34.8%, with 8,670,082 individuals not registered for jabs, while 2,696,461 are waiting for their first dose.

On September 6, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the number of new virus deaths reported each day does not reflect the accurate count for the day.

“The numbers we are seeing now are not the ones recorded within the last 24 hours. There’s a long list, and there’s a huge number in the ministry’s backlog.

“I have the actual deaths by date. We are having this backlog because we need to verify that the cause of death is Covid-19.” – The Vibes, September 12, 2021
