MIRI – Almost all of the new Covid-19 cases sent for genomic sequencing have been found to involve the Delta variant, said the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (DMC).

The cases were collected from the state’s 12 divisions, it said in a statement today.

“The operations to conduct whole genomic sequencing of Covid-19 cases from these 12 divisions were carried out by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s Institute of Health and Community Medicine.

“The head of the institute, Prof Dr David Perera, has confirmed to us (state DMC) that almost 100% of the cases throughout the 12 divisions were found to involve Delta.”

In view of this, it said, police permits are mandatory for inter-district travel in the state effective tomorrow.

Sarawak today tops the Covid-19 tally by state with 3,522 infections, and logged another five virus deaths.

Kuching saw 1,221 cases, followed by Bintulu (382), Sibu (232), Serian (231), Miri (178), Lundu (110), Mukah (106) and other districts (a few dozen each).

The new fatalities take the state’s death toll to 630.

Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching recorded three deaths: two men aged 85 and 86, and a woman aged 64.

The other two deaths were a 55-year-old man in Sibu, and a woman, 54, in Sri Aman. – The Vibes, September 13, 2021
