KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah government hopes Putrajaya will help fund repairs costing RM147 million following massive flooding in the state’s west coast recently.
“(The flooding) has caused extensive damage to infrastructure and properties in several districts, such as Beaufort and Penampang, and the surrounding areas,” said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor in a statement.
In anticipation of the monsoon season, Sabah has activated its Disaster Management Committee, which has identified 302 temporary evacuation centres and 14 agencies involving 6,800 personnel.
Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in the west coast, causing flash floods, landslides and collapsed roads in many areas, and disrupting electricity supply to more than 20,000 families.
Hajiji confirmed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has given the green light to expedite the setting up of a field hospital in Tawau to assist in the state’s Covid-19 fight.
The chief minister made the request during a virtual National Disaster Management Agency meeting chaired by Ismail Sabri today.
Hajiji said the previous field hospital operated by the armed forces has ended operations.
“The reopening of the field hospital in Tawau is pressing since upgrading works on the district hospital are only 60% completed.” – The Vibes, September 13, 2021
