KUALA LUMPUR – A 49-year-old man died while in the custody of Kuala Langat police, according to a statement by Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (Edict).
Speaking to the media yesterday, the victim’s spouse mentioned that her late husband’s cause of death was a stomach ulcer.
The statement added that based on the wife’s claims, the Forensics Department also said that the victim’s death could have been avoided if he was brought to the hospital early for treatment.
“The spouse also alleged that there were injuries and bruises on the body of the victim,” the statement by Edict said.
The NGO said this is not the first time a detainee has died after not being given the required medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Edict also pointed to an incident in Seberang Prai yesterday, where two foreigners were allegedly shot dead by police.
“Edict supports police efforts in fighting crime, but the punishment of criminals is the duty of the judiciary.
“Police must justify this incident,” the statement said.
Edict called for an inquest into both incidents and urged the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to revive efforts to enact the Independent Police Complaints of Misconduct Commission Bill. – The Vibes, September 17, 2021
