Anti-Drug Agency officer charged with murder of man in custody

SG PETANI – A National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) officer was charged in the magistrates’ court here with the murder of a 24-year-old man in July.
 
Md Ilyas Syahmi Ibnu, 34, did not enter a plea when he was charged before magistrate Anis Suraya Ahmad today.
 
The accused, who hails from Kamunting, Perak, looked composed when the charge was read out to him in court.
 
He was prosecuted under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death sentence if found guilty.
 
In the charge sheet, the accused, who worked at the Kuala Muda AADK, was charged with intentionally causing the death of Zahari Ayub in front of the Kuala Muda AADK enforcement office building here about 10.40pm on July 18.
 
The court did not allow bail and fixed October 20 for mention to enable the prosecution to submit chemistry and post-mortem reports.
 
Ilyas was represented by Mohd Shafiq Ahmed Bazari and Nur Elissa Baharudin.
 
The victim is believed to have been hurt while in custody over investigations by the AADK enforcement team.
 
His injuries were said to be serious, and he was sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment prior to his death at the medical facility two days later.
 
The victim was the youngest of four siblings and lived with his family at Taman Lambaian Jerai in Gurun.
 
Kedah police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said in a statement that police conducted their investigations thoroughly and the matter is now left to the prosecution to pursue. – The Vibes, September 21, 2021
