KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (Bera-BN) has defended the need to appoint special envoys and advisers, and revealed that they each get a RM27,227.20 monthly salary.
In a parliamentary reply, he said the appointments are significant and not a waste as these individuals have a network of relationships, experience, and specific expertise that can advance state interests.
“The ministerial rank given to them is not equal to a minister as provided for under Article 43(2)(b) of the federal constitution.
“In general, special envoys are to assist and advise the prime minister in matters relating to the country or region to which they are assigned. They are given duties and responsibilities to enhance bilateral relations between Malaysia and the said country.
“Among their responsibilities is improving foreign relations, economy, trade, investment and education. For the Middle Eastern region, it includes increasing cooperation in Islamic matters.”
Ismail Sabri was asked by Noorita Sual (Tenom-PH) about the government’s stand on such appointments.
She said they are seen as a waste and unnecessary.
Earlier this month, Ismail Sabri said Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu (Tambun-Bersatu) was given a RM27,227.20 salary when he was appointed adviser to former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Pagoh-Bersatu).
Faizal was appointed by Muhyiddin on August 5. He lost his position when the latter resigned as prime minister on August 16. – The Vibes, September 28, 2021
