KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (Baling-BN) is urging the government to set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas.
Specifically, Azeez said the probe should determine if the prosecutions pursued by Thomas during his time in office were politically motivated, as well as to focus on his recently published book, which included a number of allegations.
Speaking in Parliament, the lawmaker said this is necessary to unravel all the accusations made against Umno, after a number of its leaders were dragged to court under Thomas’ watch.
“To resolve all these (allegations) against Umno, such as that the party are robbers and the cause for the country’s damage, I urge the government to be a gentleman and set up an RCI into Tommy Thomas.
“Let the rakyat know who is the mastermind behind all the prosecutions (against Umno leaders), whether there are hidden hands pulling the strings from behind, ordering for certain individuals to be arrested and charged.
“We must be brave because it’s true. We have agreed to set up an RCI on Tabung Haji, so I hope the government will do the same on Thomas in the near future,” he said when debating the 12th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Earlier in his speech, Azeez also took the opposition to task for supposedly practising double standards in their criticisms hurled at Umno lawmakers who have been cleared of their court charges.
Citing Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Sepang-PH), Azeez noted how the former had urged Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun to resign from his position after a number of Umno lawmakers had their cases dropped recently.
He said it was particularly bemusing, seeing that during Pakatan Harapan’s time in power, about 15 individuals were cleared of their cases, including Lim Guan Eng (Bagan-PH).
“At that time, Sepang was the deputy law minister. Why did it happen then? Why the double standards today?
“When cases involving Bagan, for example, were dropped, we in the opposition then respected the AG and court’s decision, because we have a law and must abide by it.
Azeez also accused the opposition of character assassination, saying they had indoctrinated the rakyat with the term “court cluster” to put Umno in a bad light. – The Vibes, October 4, 2021
