PUTRAJAYA – The Election Commission (EC) has been officially notified on the dissolution of the 14th Melaka Legislative Assembly.

EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak in a statement today said the polls body received the notification on the October 4 dissolution from Melaka Speaker Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Ikmalrudin said based on Article 19(4) of the Melaka constitution, a state election must be held within 60 days of the date of the assembly’s dissolution.

“The EC will hold a special meeting to discuss the implementation of the state election,” he said, adding that the date of the meet will be announced later.

Rauf earlier said the state assembly has been dissolved effective yesterday, and the dissolution gazetted today.

This follows the move by four assemblymen to declare their loss of confidence in the state leadership headed by Datuk Sulaiman Md Ali.

The four are former chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron (Sg Udang-BN), Datuk Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor-BN), Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu-independent) and Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas-Bersatu).

Rauf said the existing state government will act as caretaker until after the state election. – Bernama, October 5, 2021
