We did it! M’sia crosses 90% mark for fully vaxxed adults

KUALA LUMPUR – As Malaysia lifts domestic travel restrictions for vaccinated individuals, 90.02% (21,073,482) of the adult population has been fully immunised against Covid-19 as of today.

According to data by the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee (JKJAV), 94.8% (22,185,520) of adults in the country have received at least one dose.

A total of 129,518 jabs were administered yesterday, with the top three states being Sabah (34,514), Johor (16,286) and Perak (11,004).

Cumulatively, 45.65 million doses have been administered, including under the programme for adolescents.

Taking into account the jab rate for teens, Malaysia has fully vaccinated 65.2% of the population, and 74.9% have received at least one shot.

The 90% threshold is used to decide the lifting of the interstate travel ban.

Meanwhile, the CovidNow website showed another 64 virus deaths, of which 14 were brought in dead. There were no new fatalities recorded yesterday itself.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that fully vaccinated individuals no longer have to apply for police permits to undertake interstate travel from today, with the exception being areas under the enhanced movement control order.

The lifting of the ban applies only to those who are fully vaccinated. Individuals yet to complete the vaccination regimen, or refuse to get the jab, are not allowed to cross state lines.

The ruling does not apply to children under the age of 18, said Ismail Sabri, adding that it is up to parents to ensure the safety and health of their families when travelling.

Effective today, the MyTravelPass system will be phased out.

“This means that any (Malaysian) citizen can go abroad, including for tourism and unofficial activities,” said the prime minister, adding that this, too, applies only to the fully vaccinated.

He said the 14-day quarantine period upon returning to Malaysia still applies, and that citizens may travel to any country.

Asked whether this means foreigners can visit Malaysia for tourism, he said this is not yet allowed, and the government is still looking into the matter. – The Vibes, October 11, 2021
