KUALA LUMPUR – New Covid-19 cases increased slightly today at 7,276 reported infections, bringing the cumulative total to 2,353,579 cases, said Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
In a statement today, the health director-general said the country also recorded 10,555 recoveries, totalling 2,217,057.
He also said 724 cases required intensive care, while 398 required breathing assistance.
Dr Noor Hisham said from the number of infections reported today, 150 were from categories 3, 4, and 5, while 7,126 cases were from categories 1 and 2.
The country has seen a total of 5,611 clusters since the beginning of the pandemic, including 14 new clusters today.
Clusters that have ended are at 4,828, whereas 783 remain active.
Dr Noor Hisham said five clusters were detected from the community, with six clusters in the workplace and one from a high-risk group. One cluster was detected in an education centre and another in a higher education institute registered under the Education Ministry.
The cluster with the lowest new infections is the Jalan SP 10/1 higher education institute cluster in Sepang, Selangor, with five cases, while the Air Awat-Awat community cluster in Lawas, Sarawak, recorded the highest infections at 42 cases.
Meanwhile in Sarawak, state authorities confirmed another 28 fatalities due to Covid-19.
However, the number of new infections declined to 834, the first time in more than three months that it has gone below four-digit figures.
Kuching recorded 215 cases – followed by Miri (184) and Sibu (143) – with the remaining districts seeing an average of several dozen cases each.
The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said all victims aged between 58 and 88 were from Betong (three), Sri Aman (four), Sarikei (four), Bintulu (three), Miri (six), Kuching (seven) and Sibu (one).
Their deaths were recorded in various hospitals over the past few days, but were today confirmed to be due to Covid-19, thus bringing the death toll in Sarawak to 1,027. – The Vibes, October 12, 2021.
