KUALA LUMPUR – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is leading a nine-member bipartisan parliamentary caucus formed to study regulations on the use of ketum and marijuana for medical purposes in Malaysia.
In a statement today, the caucus said the effort is a “noble bipartisan measure” to come up with a framework policy and strategy to monitor the medical use of ketum and marijuana to reduce potential risks.
“As part of our early framework, the medical cannabis caucus will meet health experts, researchers, industry players, NGOs and the relevant ministries to obtain their views on policymaking.
“Based on these studies, the caucus will draft a proposal for the government to ensure that patients who rely on medical ketum and cannabis are looked after under the country’s health system.”
The other members of the caucus are Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (Pengerang-BN), Khalid Abdul Samad (Shah Alam-PH), Datuk Xavier Jayakumar (Kuala Langat-independent), Datuk Darell Leiking (Penampang-Warisan), Dr Kelvin Yii (Bandar Kuching-PH), Dr Azman Ismail (Kuala Kedah-PH), Lukanisman Awang Sauni (Sibuti-GPS) and Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (Pasir Mas-PAS).
The statement said the caucus’ work will be in line with developing the medical ketum and cannabis industry in the country for the benefit of the health industry and public.
The spirit of bipartisan cooperation can be translated into a policy and strategy for the nation, it said. – The Vibes, October 14, 2021
