GEORGE TOWN – To counter the “anti-tourism” campaign on the ground, the state government has launched guidelines for the resumption of tourism activities for tourism players and visitors.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said concise and precise guidelines are needed to help operators and tourists ensure that the state’s tourism industry can be revived to quell post-pandemic effects.
He also labelled the “anti-tourism” campaign widely shared on social media by concerned locals as “irrational”.
“We welcome tourists, but we want them to follow the standard operating procedures. We cannot stop tourists. We need them for our economy. The only simple thing to do is our duty as hosts.
“When we talk about the economy, we need to talk about tourism. When we talk about tourism, Penang is definitely involved.
“That is why we are the first state in the country to produce these guidelines,” he said during the launch at Angsana Teluk Bahang today.
The guidelines require operators to closely inspect digital vaccination certificates and provide daily updates of Covid-19 risk status, as well as provide hand sanitisers. Visitors must check in and out via MySejahtera and comply with temperature checks, regular sanitisation, physical distancing, and double masking.
Tourists are also encouraged to conduct Covid-19 self tests before entering the state.
According to data by the Association of Tourist Attractions Penang, 14 tourist attractions in Penang welcomed a total of 27,059 from October 11 to 19.
Hotel occupancy rates also soared, with beach hotels recording 75% occupancy, the highest percentage in the state.
“Nations across the globe are eager to be known as responsible destinations, as it is an important indicator of compliance and safety.
“Under the overarching ‘responsible tourism’ arm, the return of tourism as the state’s economic powerhouse is imminent.”
