Top cop vows action against errant officers

GEORGE TOWN – Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong pledged disciplinary action against policemen who are reluctant to accept reports or complaints from the public.

In a statement, he gave assurance to the public after a video went viral on Facebook, showing of a complainant claiming that officers at the northeast district police headquarters had refused to accept a report by a victim whose modesty had allegedly been outraged.

The chief said his men had called the alleged victim back to the police headquarters and recorded her statement over the allegations.

Furthermore, the police is also conducting an internal probe into the matter following the viral video on Urban Life Volunteers’ Facebook account.

However, he did not give further details.

“We will an open an in-depth investigation into the allegation and if any policeman is found to have been negligent or careless in performing their duties, they will face disciplinary action if they are found to be involved in the issue.

“Neglecting to receive a complaint from a member of the public is a serious offence and the police will not compromise with any policemen or officers involved in the offence,” said Soffian.

He said investigations had begun under Section 354 of the Penal Code for outraging one’s modesty in relation with the alleged incident. 

Soffian added that the officers from the northeast district will continue to provide excellent service to the community.
