KUALA LUMPUR – Police offering sizeable discounts of up to 80% for road traffic summons is certainly welcomed with open arms.
However, the elation felt by netizens – who received this news on Facebook today – was stopped short once the thought of crowds flocking to payment counters at KLCC came to mind.
According to the traffic police department’s post on social media, summons issued in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya will receive an up to 80% discount, while compounds issued in other states will see an up to 70% reduction.
The discounts are also applicable at KLCC payment counters on December 9-12, from 9am to 6pm.
Although police encouraged those showing up in person for the summons discounts to comply with standard operating procedures, netizens are concerned that it may cause crowding – which is a risk during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Please allow us to apply for the discounts online. It’s not safe for people to gather during this Covid-19 season,” user Mohd Azwan Mat Tehor commented.
Additionally, given the discovery of the Omicron variant, they said such gatherings risk a rampant spread of the virus.
“Whose idea is this? Offer this online. You can’t make people crowd KLCC with Omicron and rising cases in the country,” said netizen Raymond CW.
Meanwhile, one user pointed out glitches in the MyEG Services Bhd portal that make summons payments difficult.
“It’s difficult to check summons on MyEG, and I hope the integration problems between MyEG and police would be solved immediately,” Lokman Latip said on Facebook.
Netizen Ahmad Afwan commented, “If it was online, I would pay. I am not willing to line up, although I have funds to make the payment. Please reconsider this decision.”
Facebook user Fahmi Jamal took the opportunity to explain that gatherings in closed spaces such as shopping malls may cause Covid-19 to spread among attendees.
“Closed spaces are high-risk places for Covid-19 to spread. Avoid or limit your time in places such as malls, restaurants, etc.
