BUKIT MERTAJAM – An express bus driver, who was taken in for police questioning over a collision on the North-South Expressway near Prai yesterday, was in possession of a valid driving licence.

Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Shafee Abd Samad added that the 47-year-old man’s urine test showed up negative.

“We detained the man for 24 hours to assist in our investigations. So far, he has given good cooperation and also has no past record,” he told The Vibes.

The bus driver was held in connection to an accident involving 11 vehicles at KM139.2 of the south-bound North-South Expressway.

In the 2.40pm incident, the express bus travelling from Butterworth to Ipoh, Perak was said to have lost control before clashing against a vehicle in front of it.

The express bus then collided with 10 other vehicles on the same route, causing a 15km congestion along the highway.

Shafee said only three victims suffered minor injuries and were sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for further treatment.

“Neither were there any victims seriously injured nor anyone died in the accident, and the case is being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.”

Earlier, the incident gained attention on social media after several motorists managed to record the incident.
