MIRI – A social activist in rural Sarawak urged Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) representatives to prepare early for the floods.
“These politicians should not celebrate their state election victories as they must prepare now for the looming bad weather,” Willie Kajan told The Vibes.
Kajan, a native from the Berawan ethnic group, hails from the Long Terawan settlement in Mulu National Park, about 200km from Miri city.
He said that state politicians must look at the massive floods happening in the peninsula now and take note.
“Do not celebrate the state election victories, there is no need for jubilation. Look at the situation in the peninsula now.
“The heavy rain and swift floods caught people by surprise and the politicians there were also caught unprepared.
“We can see from their response that they are not able to react well. Do not let the same thing happen in Sarawak,” he said.
Kajan also said the monsoon season in Sarawak is as brutal as the monsoon in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
He called on politicians and welfare authorities to constantly monitor the weather changes daily.
“There are signs that many rivers are seeing rising water volumes,” he added. – The Vibes, December 21, 2021
