Landslide leads 128 students to evacuate Gombak hostel block

KUALA LUMPUR – Some 128 male students were ordered to evacuate last night from a hostel block at International Islamic University Malaysia here in Gombak after a landslide yesterday.

According to the Selayang Fire and Rescue Department, a student told the authorities that the landslip incident had occurred at 6.45pm yesterday during a downpour.

“The university management then ordered the 128 students to evacuate the building. Upon inspection, there were no cracks found on the walls and floors of the affected building.

“However, a part of the road near the hostel block has sunk 3m, and the university has cordoned it off with traffic cones and barriers.”

It added that the university management has informed the Public Works Department for further action over the incident.

The Fire and Rescue team had been deployed at 9pm last night.

A total of 46 landslide locations have been reported in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur to date, with nine categorised as critical, according to the Minerals and Geosciences Department.

In the Northeast Monsoon Landslide Incident report issued by the department, nine landslides occurred at two locations – Kg Palimbayan in Sg Penchala and Taman Duta in Seri Duta.

The affected Selangor areas include Taman Nusa, Subang; Teratai Apartment, Selayang; Jalan Bunga Anggerik, Taman Melawati; Jalan Melati 7, Taman Seri Melati; Kg Sepakat, Batu 16, Rawang; Jalan Saidina Hamzah, Kg Bukit Sungai Puteh, Ampang; and Jalan Haji Abdul Latif, Kg Bukit Kapar.

Other areas comprise Zooview Park; Riverdale Park Apartment; Taman Melur Ampang; Kg Sungai Kelambu, Banting; Jalan Wangsa 1, Ulu Klang; Jalan Selayang-Rawang; and Jalan Banglo, Batu Arang – all located in Selangor. – The Vibes, December 27, 2021
