KOTA KINABALU – A former Masterchef Malaysia finalist and her husband were charged with the murder of their 28-year-old maid at the magistrates’ court here, today.
No plea was recorded from petroleum company engineer Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Mohd Sulong, 33, and her husband Mohammad Ambree Yunos @ Unos, 40, a contractor, who appeared before magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun.
They were accused of killing Nur Afiah Daeng Damin, at their condominium in Amber Tower, Lido Avenue, Jalan Lintas, Penampang between December 10 and 13.
The offence falls under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death sentence upon conviction.
Ambree, who is also a former officer at an airline company, was represented by counsel Ram Singh and Kimberly Ye while Etiqah, who was a finalist in Masterchef Malaysia 2012, was represented by counsel Datuk Seri Rakhbir Singh.
The court fixed February 10 for further mention of the case and ordered both accused to be detained under custody.
It was reported on December 13 that the couple had lodged a police report after claiming to have discovered the dead body of the victim at their condominium after returning from a vacation in Kundasang, about 80km from here.
The couple was remanded a day after the report was lodged.
At the time, The Star reported that the police needed to get further details on drugs taken by Etiqah, as she informed the court that the drugs were medicine prescribed by her doctor for her depression and anxiety disorders.
The couple had been subsequently released on police bail on December 21.
