MIRI – Sarawakians, especially those in longhouses, are prohibited from merrymaking tonight and on New Year’s Day, reminded the authorities.
Police have issued warnings to longhouse chiefs banning New Year’s Eve gatherings or feasting and drinking.
Kanowit district police chief Tega Bilong said the ban imposed by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) includes all forms of New Year’s countdowns and celebrations.
“Police want to remind longhouse folk that the ban is not only applicable in cities and towns, but also to rural settlements.
“There must be no gatherings of any kind, as a precaution against the spread of Covid-19,” he said in a statement.
On Tuesday, Sarawak imposed a blanket ban on New Year’s Eve public celebrations statewide.
Entertainment outlet operators are also prohibited from organising countdown events.
“Entertainment and business outlets cannot operate beyond midnight and no New Year’s Eve parties are allowed. Any premises found violating this ban will be penalised,” said SDMC. – The Vibes, December 31, 2021
