BALIK PULAU – Penang flags off 350 cyclists in conjunction with its City Day 2022 for their 25km ride early this morning as part of the state’s efforts to boost its ecotourism programmes.
Penang Island City Council mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang expressed his delight to see the continuity of these programmes, including the annual City Walk 2022 Esplanade on January 1 and the sixth edition of City Ride Goes Eco @ Balik Pulau.
“Since its inception, we noticed that there are more cyclists at Balik Pulau during the weekend.
“I believe these events promote the cycling activity here and, as a result, also encourage ecotourism, like what Balik Pulau MP Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik and the state government have been pushing for.”
Unfortunately, because of the strict standard operating procedures, the number of participants has been limited to 350, from 1,000 previously.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said these programmes are activities that highlight what the city council is doing and how it involves the public.
He added that nature-based activities highlight the greenery and the serenity in the villages, paddy fields and mangrove forests in Balik Pulau.
Also in attendance are Penang Youth and Sports exco Soon Lip Chee, Bakhtiar and Pulau Betong assemblyman Mohd Tuah Ismail. – The Vibes, January 2, 2022
