[UPDATED] Another death in custody, this time at Marang police station

KUALA LUMPUR – Another death in custody has been reported in the country, this time in the lock-up of Marang police station in Terengganu.

In a statement, Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Datuk Azri Ahmad said a report was submitted on the death at 3pm this afternoon.

He added that the death involved a 38-year-old Malay man, who had been arrested under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Azri said the victim was detained for three days, from January 28 to January 30 at the magistrates’ court in Terengganu.

“The Criminal Investigation and Death in Custody Unit will conduct an investigation related to this case.”

On January 13, a custodial death of a 63-year-old man at a police lock-up at the Taiping district police headquarters in Perak was reported.

The victim died while awaiting his case’s second mention in court.

Two police officers and two of the victim’s fellow inmates have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been remanded until January 20.

Just four days later, on January 16, a 37-year-old man died in a police lock-up in Kota Baru, Kelantan while under remand for drug-related offences at the Pengkalan Chepa police station.

However, police said there was no foul play involved in the victim’s death.

Azri said an autopsy performed on the body found no injuries or elements of crime.

“The cause of death is water in the lungs. The incident has been classified as sudden death,” he said in a statement. – The Vibes, January 28, 2022
