GEORGE TOWN – Penang registered 522 new Covid-19 cases including 33 cases involving foreigners as of noon today, bringing the cumulative number to 169,852 cases in the state, according to the Health Ministry’s CovidNow portal.
Universiti Sains Malaysia closed its operations today as there was a surge in the number of new cases on campus, but no information was available on the number of cases.
The Health Ministry identified the Armed Forces camp in Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Sg Ara, Bayan Lepas in the Barat Daya district of the island as one of the state’s active clusters.
It has identified a total of 19 new clusters including 12 educational institutions, three industrial clusters, three workplace clusters, and a detention centre cluster.
The cluster in Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim cluster has 20 new cases, while the Jalan Pekan Darat cluster has eight, the Jalan Bukit Minyak Dua cluster has six, the Jalan Damai cluster in Bukit Mertajam has four, the Jalan Sg Kluang cluster has 22, and and the Bandar Bertam cluster has two.
There are 2,874 active cases, including the 127 newly registered cases in the state. A total of 128 patients or 61.1% have been hospitalised, with 29.9% ventilators used, 48.1% intensive care units used, and 2,534 people placed under home quarantine.
The state had registered 23 deaths in the last two weeks.
The Health Ministry had on January 28 reported that Delta emerged as Penang’s top Covid-19 variant, according to the CovidNow portal, with the state registering 413 cases, followed by 20 Omicron and 10 Beta cases. – The Vibes, February 6, 2022
