KUALA LUMPUR – Following accusations of irregularities in its latest electoral roll, the Election Commission (EC) said it has obtained voter data from the National Registration Department (NRD).
In its statement today, the EC’s corporate communications unit said the implementation of automatic voter registration for Malaysians aged 18 and above is based on information provided by NRD.
“We are always committed to carrying out our responsibilities and functions, including publishing the electoral roll on a monthly basis,” it said.
The EC added that eligible voters can check the accuracy of their details through various methods, including via its official portal, mobile app, and the websites of other state EC offices.
For Johor voters, the electoral body said checks on their voting centre and channels, among others, can be conducted beginning yesterday.
Last Thursday, PKR election director Fuziah Salleh had alleged that there were multiple oddities in the roll to be used for the upcoming Johor election, including names being listed as “deceased” and “expired”.
She had said that her own checks on the EC website found this to be true, and questioned if the Johor polls would be compromised due to these irregularities.
In her statement, she had questioned the EC’s decision to charge parties a very high cost in order to obtain the electoral roll, despite it being displayed for free previously.
She had said this has made it more costly for political parties to check the roll’s authenticity, and claimed that the roll has yet to be put up for sale despite it being gazetted over a month ago.
According to the EC, the electoral roll for the Johor election was available since yesterday, and can be purchased through its headquarters in Putrajaya or at its Johor office. – The Vibes, February 22, 2022
