MIRI – Covid-19 infections in Sarawak have increased by nearly 300% today, said its State Disaster Management Committee in its daily update.
Authorities registered 1,248 new cases today, in comparison to yesterday’s figure of 442.
The committee secretariat said in a press statement that there were 430 cases registered in Kuching today, 238 in Miri, and 186 in Sibu, plus dozens of cases in various districts with three active clusters.
At the same time, 18 patients were warded in hospitals throughout the state for Categories 3 to 5 infections.
Furthermore, this morning, Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian had also confirmed he tested positive for Covid-19 last night when undergoing a RTK-PCR test, as he intended to travel out of the country.
“The results came back positive for Covid-19. I am shocked, as I have always carried out self-tests.
“My self-test kit results have always been negative. This goes to show that we can never be too confident. The Covid-19 Omicron type is highly infectious,” he said.
However, the lawmaker said he does not have any serious symptoms yet.
At the moment, the deputy chief minister is under mandatory self-isolation while he monitors his health progress on a daily basis.
He urged those who had come into close contact with him in recent days to go for check-ups.
Dr Sim again advised the public not to take for granted the preventive measures like wearing face masks, observing personal hygiene, and adhering to social distancing rules.
