MIRI – All four biggest urban districts in Sarawak witnessed a surge in Omicron cases today.
Kuching saw 436 new infections, while Miri recorded 270.
Sibu had 194, while Bintulu logged 105 cases, with a man aged 79 in Kapit district being brought in dead to Kapit Hospital.
His death was confirmed to be due to Covid-19, said the State Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a press statement.
There are also six serious cases that require hospitalisation and three active clusters statewide, said the secretariat.
Sarawak started seeing a sudden increase in Omicron Covid-19 cases yesterday – about 300% compared to the day before.
Yesterday morning, Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian had confirmed that he tested positive for Covid-19.
In his social media posting about his latest state of health today, he said he was shocked by the latest development.
Dr Sim said he had undergone a Covid-19 PCR test as he was going to travel overseas.
“The results came back positive for Covid-19.
“I am shocked as I have always carried out self-tests using the self-test kits.
“My self-test kit results have always been negative.
“This goes to show that we can never be too confident.
“The Covid-19 Omicron type is highly infectious,” he said.
Dr Sim said he does not have any serious symptoms until now, and is isolating himself as part of the mandatory requirement while closely monitoring his daily health progress.
He urged those who had come into close contact with him in recent days to go for check-ups.
Dr Sim has once again advised the public not to take for granted preventive measures like wearing face masks, undertaking strict personal hygiene practices, and observing social distancing protocols.
