KUALA LUMPUR – Although the state government has yet to gazette the name change, signage renaming St Paul’s Hill to Melaka Hill is up.
Melaka Museum Corporation (Perzim) general manager Mohd Nasruddin Rahman told Melaka Hari Ini that the new signage for Melaka Hill is up to avoid public confusion, especially among tourists.
Perzim has completed the paperwork for the name change and is awaiting its gazettement by the state government.
“The proposal to change the name of Melaka Hill has been brought to the attention of the state government. It is only a matter of it being gazetted.
“The place was named Melaka Hill during the reign of the Melaka sultanate.
“However during colonial times, the name was changed due to the location being near to St Paul’s Church,” he was quoted as saying.
He said the name change had been proposed before but was opposed by certain groups for fear of affecting the location or position of St Paul’s Church.
“They thought that the name change of St Paul’s Hill would also change the name of the church there. This has nothing to do with it.
“Now, there are no issues and we have restored the name of Melaka Hill.” – The Vibes, March 3, 2022
