MIRI – Complacency is fuelling yet another surge of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak, involving the Omicron variant this time around.
Progressive Democratic Party president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said besides complacency amongst the public, there is also a general lack of enforcement and adherence to preventive measures.
Tiong, who is Bintulu MP and Dudong state assemblyman, said in his social media chats with his constituents today that he himself had been infected with Covid-19 recently.
“I am recovering but I am feeling fatigued. It is a dreadful experience. I don’t know how I got infected. It shows that Covid-19 is still very infectious.
“People in general have become too complacent. There are already too many big social gatherings all over like BBQ parties, big celebrations, family dinners, fun activities.
“The adherence to SOPs (standard operating procedures) and enforcement of preventive measures are also too lax,” Tiong said, adding that there is a need to reduce social activities.
All unnecessary events should be cancelled for now, he advised.
“Stay away from public places as much as possible. The Omicron is very infectious,” he cautioned.
Tiong noted that Omicron had surged by the dozens every day in all urban districts including his parliamentary constituency of Bintulu.
Sarawak had for the past four days seen a daily increase in Omicron infections of more than a thousand new cases with Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu being the worst-hit. – The Vibes, March 4, 2022
